Varus defeated in the Teutoburg Forest 9AD

Varus entered a wealthy Syria and left it poor. He took the money from Syria and Judea and funded legions to invade Germany. Varus was killed and three legions were destroyed. Augustus who was related to Varus by marriage removed his name from public monuments and mourned the loss of his army. This battle along with the battle of Carrhae, 53 BC, in modern day Turkey were disasterous defeats for the Roman Empire. Solar Eclipses may have influenced the perceptions in both of these battles and future battles to come. "Those who live by the sword, die by the sword," Jesus Christ.
