Total eclipse of 19 AD during Tiberius
The defeat of Varus and the loss of his 3 legions had a profound lasting effect on Rome and subsequent invasions of the German heartland were unsuccessful. Tiberius was unable to recapture the German provinces lost by Varus. His General Germanicus was poisoned in Antioch in 19 AD postponing further Roman invasions of Germany. In this instance perhaps the total eclipse of 19 AD was perceived as a bad omen for future military incursions.
